The book review: The catcher in the Rye.

An ancient boy of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield, is the hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye. He leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days due to circumstances that appear to preclude adult, second hand explanation. For us to make some final statement about him or his storey, the boy himself is at once too simplistic and too complicated. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was not merely deeply drawn to attractiveness but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it, born in the country. In this book, there are many voices: the voices of children, the voices of adults, underground voices, but the voice of Holden is the most eloquent of all.

He issues a finely expressed scream of combined pain and joy, transcending his own vernacular, but staying beautifully true to it. He holds much of the suffering to himself, and by himself, as most loves and clowns and poets of the higher ranks, however. From all his heart, the joy he gives away, or puts aside. For the reader who can take it, it is there to hold it.

The classic novel of adolescent angst and revolt by Salinger was first published in 1951. The novel was named in the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923 in Time’s 2005 list. It was listed as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library and its readers. For its extensive use of profanity and depiction of sexuality, it has also been criticised in the court and in the 1950s and 60s it was the book that any young boy needs to read.
