The book review: The Book Thief

The Book Thief is in 1939 Naz’s Germany. There’s a country trying to catch its breath. Death has never been more intense, and always will be busier.

Liesel ‘s life is transformed by her brother’s grave when she picks up a single piece, partly covered in the snow. It’s The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left behind by mistake, and it’s her first book-throwing act. So a love affair starts with books and sentences, as Liesel learns to read with the aid of her foster father, who plays the accordion. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the library of the mayor ‘s wife, wherever books can be found.

Yet there are moments that are risky. Liesel ‘s world is simultaneously opened up and locked down as Liesel’s foster family hides a Jew in their cellar.
