I Can’t Breathe: The incident
On 17 July 2014, a 43-year old Black man, Eric Garner, was put to his death on a Staten Island sidewalk after he was arrested for selling cigarettes by a police officer described as an unlawful chokehold. Garner filmed and shown millions of final moments of his life in film. Her last agonised, “I can’t breathe” sentences have become a scream for the emerging resistance movement in the Black Live Matters. In the end, a large jury refused to charge Garner’s cop on the pavement.
What’s inside the book?
Matt Taibbi’s profound report of these incidents frees Eric Garner from the abstracted reports of newspapers and helps us to truly see the individual — all of his faults and inconsistencies unchanged. Garners was not a villager nor a victor, but a fiercely confident man willing to do his very best for his kin was afflicted by suffering and eventually subdued by a power beyond his control. His wife and father had a deep life past.
I can’t Breathe : the book overview
There are of course no isolation miscarriages of justice in America and the terms by which this tragedy was made possible are also discussed in I Can’t Breathe Taibbi. The Kaleidoscopic account of Taibbi illuminates subjects relating to police, the systematic imprisonment of inmates, the underworld economy and ethnic inequalities of law enforcement, both with vibrant vignettes of life on the streets and inside our court system. The Pragmatic District Attorney, in a half-hearted approach to prosecuting the case against the radical mayor trapped between the demands of outrageous activism and the dragging of recalcitrant police officers, does not appear insulated.
I Can’t Breathe presents a masterly account of metropolitan America, as well as the perverse incentives that have been incorporated into our legal structure, and the specifics of one event to resolve the human costs of our broken approach to the dispensation of felony justice.
A work of riveting literary journalism that explores the roots and repercussions of the infamous killing of Eric Garner by the New York City police—from the bestselling author of The Divide
