The Book Review of: Room on the Roof by Ruskin Bond
Room on the roof is the first novel by Ruskin Bond. He wrote this story when he was just 17 years old.
It is the story of a teenage boy Rusty who lives with his uncle in the hills of Mussoorie, India. He made three friends and begin to explore the market of Mussoorie which he never visited before. After playing the colourful festival Holi with his friends, he returned to his house. His uncle didn’t like him going to the market and now he has come with a torn shirt and coloured face. He tussled with his uncle and gaining enough courage, he ran away from his house.
Rusty become homeless and he has nowhere to go but he was experiencing freedom for the very first time in his life.
From the book:
If tomorrow there was no Somi at the chaat shop, no Ranbir, then what would he do? This question badgered him persistently, making him an unwilling slave to reality. He did not know where his friends lived, he had no money, he could not ask the chaat wallah for credit on the strength of two visits. Perhaps he should return to the amorous lady in the bazaar; perhaps . . . but no, one thing was certain, he would never return to his guardian…
He spent the night sleeping on the street in the market. His friends helped him to find a job of teaching English to a boy. Rusty started living in a room on the roof of the house of his employer. Thus, the name “Room on the roof”.
