Children found an old book and recognise a map showing the local coastline. Barney recognises that the map may refer to King Arthur and his knights. Children decides to keep the discovery to themselves.
Mr. Withers and his sister Polly visit the Drew family at the grey house and invite them for fishing on their yacht. Jane becomes suspicious of their invitation and decides to stay at home. While everyone is gone for fishing, Jane finds a guidebook to Trewissick which has a similar map like the secret map they had found. She visits a local vicar for some help about the map.
The house is burgled with attention paid only to bookshelves and wall hangings. The children realize that someone else also seeks the old book. They share everything with their great uncle Merry and realises that map shows the way for a hidden treasure and they have dangerous grown-up rivals in this pursuit. So, begins their quest for the grail and they have to find it before the agents of dark Mr. Withers and his sister Polly.
From the Book: Over Sea Under Stone
Always, wherever he was, unusual things seemed to happen. He would often disappear for a long time, and then suddenly come through the Drews’ front door as if he had never been away, announcing that he had found a lost valley in South America, a Roman fortress in France, or a burned Viking ship buried on the English coast. The newspapers would publish enthusiastic stories of what he had done.
But by the time the reporters came knocking at the door, Great-Uncle Merry would be gone, back to the dusty peace of the university where he taught. They would wake up one morning go to call him for breakfast, and find that he was not there. And then they would hear no more of him until the next time, perhaps months later, that he appeared at the door. It hardly seemed possible that this summer, in the house he had rented for them in Trewissick, they would be with him in one place for four whole weeks.Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper.
